Chapter 9
Death is Not the End

One of the most beautiful things about working with God is that He can use people of all ages. Whether it’s the child whose lunch fed five thousand men (Matthew 14:14-21), Moses, whose youthful strength didn’t dissipate for 120 years (Deuteronomy 34:7), or Noah, who built an ark and orchestrated the most extensive evacuation of humans and animals at more than five hundred years of age (Genesis 9:28-29), God consistently responds to faith and honors the faithful.

If it’s exciting that your age doesn’t count with the Father, there’s more good news: God can continue to use you even after your biological clock stops. Elisha presents the most dramatic case in the Bible. He was a powerful prophet who received twice the anointing of his master, Elijah. Second Kings 13:21 describes an occasion when some Israelites were burying a man. Terrified by a band of invaders, they threw the body into Elisha’s tomb. When the body touched Elisha’s bones, the man came to life and stood up on his feet! If you lived for God, He reserves the right to use even your lifeless earthen vessel.

You also have the ability to plan your life so you continue to impact the world long after you’ve passed to glory. Before Moses died, he took time to bless each of the 12 tribes of Israel and ensure that the blessings were memorialized in writing (Deuteronomy 33:1-29). Scripture records that Joshua, the son of Nun, was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses commissioned him to lead Israel by laying his hands on him.

Before he ascended, Jesus prepared and commissioned 12 disciples who would take the gospel to the rest of the world. We’re all beneficiaries of that action. Each of us has the ability to leave a legacy that will influence posterity for the kingdom. There’s no better time to start planning for future generations than now.

Ways to Share the Gospel Posthumously

5. Write a will. Bequeath wealth—land, building, investment, cash, or other assets—to an evangelistic association.

6. Record your testimony. Establish a family tradition of audiovisually recording family history and testimonies of God’s goodness. Pass the recording down from one generation to the next.

7. Make a wish. People often feel compelled to grant the wish of a dying person. Make a wish for each child, grandchild, and great-grandchild to accept Christ as his or her personal Lord and Savior. Be sure to share your wish with the family.

8. Write your autobiography. If you have walked faithfully with God, you have experienced His goodness in many ways. Write your life’s story to share His faithfulness with others.

9. Write an invitational requiem. Instead of the living glorifying you at your graveside, write a requiem that exalts God and invites people to submit their lives to Him.

10. Share Christ with an epitaph. The permanent identification on your grave or tomb would not be doing justice to your life and legacy if it excluded your faith. Use it to minister Christ to the living. Below are examples of statements that could be included in your epitaph:

I am spending eternity with my
Lord Jesus Christ.
Where will you spend yours?
You still have a chance to find Christ today.
Do not hesitate.

I have exchanged a difficult life
on the Earth for eternal joy in the bosom of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
What will you exchange your challenges for?
