Faith Based Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
Find
out how your organization can benefit from this groundbreaking
initiative
According
to a survey conducted by Newsweek and Beliefnet in August 2005,
84
percent of Americans stated that spirituality was important in
their daily lives.
57 percent said it was
very
important. For millions of Americans, faith is a powerful way to cope
with the challenges that life throws their way. Beyond coping, it
enables many to strive for and achieve excellence in all areas of
their lives.
If
millions of your workers find value, hope, strength, encouragement,
support, solace, and succor in their faith, why wouldn't you offer
them an avenue to benefit from it?
Faith-Based
Employee Assistance Program (FB-EAP) does that for you. In an
unobtrusive, noninvasive way, it offers faith-based counsel that
uplifts, motivates, heals, boosts energy and confidence, refocuses,
and enhances commitment and performance.
FB-EAP
is designed to supplement your traditional EAP. It rounds out the
range of support the traditional EAP is able to provide by focusing
on the less understood but extremely critical component of our being,
the spiritual component.
Is
this for everyone? From the 2005 Newsweek/Beliefnet poll
referenced above, 85 percent of Americans say they're Christians.
Like your traditional EAP program, FB-EAP can be made available to
your entire employee population. But just as the multicultural,
specialty, and gendered-based diversity initiatives in some
organizations are geared to the needs of a specific population, this
program is based on biblical principles and geared toward the
Christians in your organization. The only difference is that
Christians are likely to be in the majority of all the diverse groups
in your workplace. This is good news and provides another reason to
be attentive to the population.
How
does it work? Similar to your traditional EAP, employees
can benefit from FB-EAP by calling a Christian counselor at a
dedicated toll-free number. The counselor listens to the employee and
counsels him or her from the Bible. If the employee is willing, the
counselor will say a prayer at the end of the session and make a
follow-up appointment.
Additional
contacts can be made via email, and written materials such as
newsletters and books are sent via email or regular mail.
While
honoring counselor-client confidentiality, a quarterly report of
usage, trends, and recommendations is provided to client
organization.
What
Christian values is this program based on? Among others,
the Bible teaches honesty, hard work, integrity, fairness, justice,
loyalty, commitment, strength, honor, and perseverance as values that
Christians must uphold. At a time when the ethics of many
organizations is under scrutiny, having a counseling program that
reinforces these shared values can go a long way in steering your
organization in the right direction.
Why
are other organizations becoming more faith-friendly? In
addition to the above reason, the Alexander Hamilton Institute
reported in August 2005 that religion in workplaces is a "hot new
employment trend." They reported that some companies are going as
far as sponsoring faith-based affinity groups or offering chaplain
services. They stated most companies are doing it to win the battle
for the best and brightest talent.
When
should you recommend Faith-Based EAP?
The
following are examples of times when your employees can pick up the
phone and call their FB-EAP counselor:
- When
their personal/family problems begin to spill over at work
- When
they're stressed, depressed, or desperate
- When
they've just experienced a loss - loss of family member, job,
etc.
- When
they're in a conflict with others
- When
they're having interpersonal issues
- When
their performance is taking a downturn
- When
they have a problem with anger, aggression, letting go, etc.
What
FB-EAP is not.
FB-EAP is not a psychological, psychiatric,
financial, medical, or legal counseling service. It's counseling
provided by Christians who
(a)
are well versed in the Bible,
(b)
are seasoned Christian counselors,
(c)
have years of experience in corporate America including background in
leadership
and
human resource management, and
(d)
are committed to helping other Christians and their organizations
excel.
